With the start of the academic year, many of us have begun phase 2 of med school! Those of you who have been on your clinical placements, how are you finding it? Did you do anything over the lockdown period to prepare?
It's been a little chaotic so far! Considering that COVID cases are rising again there's been a lot of shuffling around on the wards to try and accommodate everyone, I've been moved 3 times already. Other than that I've learnt a lot by following the nurses and doctors around and have gotten to take a few obs which has been great!
@najma aden I've been moved from complex health to diabetes back to complex health, so mostly older patients with a lot of co-morbidities. What about you?
I do feel though I used to feel like a uni student- going to lectures etc but finally I feel like a med student now on the wards etc. It feels real, if that makes sense. Like this is why I'm doing my
yesss! getting to apply everything we've learnt over the past 2 years is such a cool feeling and it feels like you're that one step closer to actually being a doctor :))
I took lockdown as a chance to take a break and focus on things I enjoy that I sometimes don't have time for whilst at uni so I was worried I might feel swamped and out of my depth getting back into it. But, I have to say I definitely don't regret it! The ongoing situation definitely has its downsides but I've found the longer induction period (usually it's a week but this year we have a month of an 'introduction to clinical learning' so that we all get the mandatory in person skills teaching we need while allowing for social distancing) has made the jump into clinical years a lot smoother. I'm circling between 3 different general medicine/geriatric wards and the staff are all so welcoming and helpful, and there's a good mix of patients with a whole host of different conditions to speak to :) I'm feeling very positive about the year to come!
It’s been going well so far! My favourite thing about medicine has to be actually being on the wards, like Hithin said it reminds you of why you wanted to be a doctor in the first place :)
I didn’t do anything to prepare over lockdown and I’m glad I didn’t because this is quite intense again and I’m finding myself glad that I enjoyed my time rather than stressing, since that’s what I’m doing now 😰
I didn’t do anything either! to be honest this induction period that we have is enough prep imo, and I’m really glad I took the opportunity to just relax these past few months!
Yeah I also did absolutely nothing over the lockdown period to prep, which i'm lowkey regretting now, because it's been hard to get back into the swing of things.
I'm on the AMU ward which has been very interesting, it's great to see a diverse range of conditions and actually learn medicine from more of a clinical perspective.
It's fun doing something different to what we did in years 1 and 2, and it almost feels like a different world - similar to what hithin said, i feel different and it's all becoming real now! I didn't prepare at all over lockdown - I used the time to relax and spend time with my family, and I don't regret it because everything is so hectic and uncertain these days, but I can look back at lockdown/summer and know I relaxed and recharged my batteries. It's nice to be going through clinical years with friends, whether they're in my base hospital or in different ones, and it's sad not to be able to spend as much time together, but it's nice knowing we're all in the same boat <3
I have really enjoyed it so far. There’s a lot of variety and everything is being taken a bit further clinically now. Starting to understand why we learnt the things we did in first 2 years and how it can all be applied. It’s great being in a clinical environment as well and speaking to patients. All in all it’s very interesting and the discussions in the new sessions are very helpful.

i feel like this is gonna help all the knowledge we've accumulated over pre-clinical years stick!

I find that having an iPad on the wards is SOOO helpful 🤩
Super helpful, especially to quickly search conditions up that you see on the ward, so that you actually understand whats going on.

I went to some revision sessions and talks over lockdown but that’s about it really 😂😭
