What is your least favourite thing about medicine?
There's a lot of sacrifice! I think it bothers me less now but definitely during 1st + 2nd year I found it difficult seeing my flatmates on different courses with so much more free time in comparison to me. Going out on a Wednesday is a literal nightmare to me now but back then I definitely felt like I was missing out on the classic 'uni experiences'. That being said you can always find a balance, it just takes a bit more thought and planning behind it :)
Thereâs SO MUCH that we have to learn and know, I find it very stressful haha đ
Definitely agree with that. The volume of the content is enormous. I honestly feel that whenever I learn something new, thereâs still so much more that I need to know. Itâs like running a race that never ends
and not knowing how much we need to know urghhh
Yeah gosh, there is so so much content and it really doesnât help that I donât have a great long term memory so every time after I learn it I end up forgetting and having to learn it all over again!
having to memorise certain things without understanding it completely! Stuff like origins and insertions- thereâs no clever trick to help you remember most of them, you just have to put in hours and hours to memorise themđ© idk if I make any sense lol
I always found this difficult as well because it's not the same learning it from a textbook, website or video. It can be very confusing to work out what's going on.
Yeah this is so hard but I guess in medicine there are certain things that you just need to know even if you don't completely understand it đ«đ„
Maybe some of the resources ya kno. A lot of them are very accessible and very helpful. But, there is so much great stuff out there that can be difficult to access at times. And that can be a bit of a shame.
and sometimes thereâs too much choice!
The most difficult part of medicine for me is that there soo much of it. This is brilliant because the possibilities of what you can within the field is immense, but learning so much, in often quite short periods of time does require hard work and organisation
One of my least favourite things about medicine is exam season even though the content starts to come together and make more sense, I always find it stressful, learning huge amounts of information in such a short period of time.
Weirdly though exam season is when I have made some of my greatest memories- I miss stressing with medics at 2am in the library
this isn't really course related but I've never really liked the sort of medic culture and hierarchy, think everyone should be proud of themselves for getting here, but there's definitely a superiority issue among some medics - even if it is just light hearted banter
also exams literally take the fun out of it :( I know they're necessary, but I wish it wasn't sođ
